How to do skincare – PM

Evening Skincare

So now we have nailed our daytime routine, now let’s look at what order to apply your evening skincare products!

*Did you know it’s best to apply skincare products after brushing your teeth?*
Not only can certain ingredients in toothpaste cause irritation, dryness and even burning, but the bacteria from your mouth in the dribbled-out toothpaste can negatively affect the skin, too.

Step 1: Cleanser

Double cleansing is a must of a night time…can you imagine all the grime on your skin? It is extremely important to remove makeup, dirt, and pollutants that have accumulated on your skin during the day, before heading to bed. The first cleanse will remove the makeup and the second will ensure a deep cleanse of the pores.

Step 2: Exfoliator

The evening time is a perfect time to spend more time on your skincare routine. Exfoliation is soooo important to remove all them dead skin cells which are making you feel dull and almost grey looking. Exfoliation will help your products to penetrate deeper as there won’t be that dead skin barrier, meaning you will see better results from your skincare products. I would suggest starting with 1 – 2 times a week, once a week if you have sensitive skin.

Step 3: Target

Now is the time to start using a retinol – please, only ever apply this in the evening as you can become sun sensitive. It’s also very important to ensure this is fully cleansed off in the morning. The key to retinol is start low and slow! Retinol can be followed by targeting serums however refrain from any AHAs or BHA, as this will cause sensitivity.

A retinol eye cream and a neck firming cream would also be perfect to use in the evening. Opt for a serum filled with hyaluronic acid, which pulls water from the air into your skin to plump it up and keep it hydrated while you sleep

I will cover Retinols in this series of emails – so stay posted!

Step 4: Moisturise

Remember this will keep your skin barrier healthy. Also a moisturiser is perfect for those of you just starting your retinol journey – you can mix your retinol into the moisturiser or do a retinol sandwich (applying moisturiser then retinol then mosituriser again) to ween your skin on to retinol and to avoid any irritation.

Step 5: Protect

Sunscreen isn’t required of an evening, however if you ever use any actives, retinol or exfoliate, you must wear an SPF the next day to prevent sun damage and premature ageing.
