Retinol Use

Retinoids – Vitamin A

The Retinoid Family

Retinols are considered the gold standard in anti-aging products, but there are many forms with varying benefits and side affects.

All retinols are derivatives of vitamin A, ‘Retinoid is the umbrella term for OTC (over the counter) & prescription Vitamin A derivatives.

What is vitamin A?

Vitamin A is a potent antioxidant ingredient that helps protect the skin against UV damage and slows the signs of aging. Vitamin A is great for skin conditions like acne, hyperpigmentation and aging skin. It’s composed of two parts: Carotenoids (Pro Vitamin A) and Retinoids. Carotenoids, like Beta Carotene, help maintain healthy skin. Retinoids are the active form of vitamin A and can take on a few forms, like Retinyl Esters, Retinol, Retinaldehyde, Retinyl Palmitate and Retinoic Acid.

Who Can Benefit?

Anyone who is concerned with acne, signs of aging, and wishes to prevent early signs of aging can benefit from the use of retinoids. Perhaps you’re wondering — when is the right time to start? There is no black and white answer to this. However, if your main issue is mild acne, you can start anytime.

Additionally, the truth is that our skin collagen production significantly reduces by 1% each year as we reach the age of 25. This fact is good reason to start on your retinoids journey as you reach your mid to late-20s. Being diligent with the usage of this ingredient will help prevent your skin from forming (more) fine lines before it’s too late!
